VICOFORTE (CN), 6 KM FROM MONDOVI'
Origin of the Sanctuary
Towards the end of the fifteenth century in the valley of Ermena, at the foot of Vicoforte, five kilometers from Mondovì, at the edge of a path, a rustic pillar was built on which the Holy Mary with the Child on her knees was frescoed. It was popularly called Madonna del Pilone ( Madonna of the Pillar ).
In 1592 the shot of a hunter inadvertently hit the image. This attracted the first devout people. Within a few years, the arrival of worshippers grew at an astounding rate. They came from several regions of Europe
The Virgin
comforted with marvellous graces of healing, reconciliations, conversions. The
participation of so many people, which on during certain days reached tens of
thousands, encouraged the Bishop of Mondovì,
Monsignor Castrucci, to undertake in 1596 the daring construction of the

a "spiritual History of spiritual graces and favours" by the Virgin
Mother began, and it extended through the centuries up to our days. The
Sanctuary became one of the most admired, gathered and attended Marian centres.
A grand monument
of faith and art
The
Sanctuary-Basilica "Regina Montis
Regalis" in Vicoforte Mondovì
is a work of the faith of a frankly religious population. The construction
lasted two centuries.
> Ellipse-shaped dome: the largest in the world, major axis of 37.15 m;. a height of 75m; perimeter of the Sanctuary 250 m.
> Begun in 1596 and finished in 1733. Its promoters were the Bishop Castrucci and Carlo Emanuele with a two-fold purposes: to dedicate it to the worship of the Madonna and to make it tomb of the Savoy Royals.
> The Author of the project and executor of first part, made of sandstone, of neoclassic character, was the architect Ascanio Vitozzi of Orvieto. The higher part, made of terracotta, baroque style, is work of Francesco Gallo, architect of Mondovì who realized with this architecture his masterpiece.
> Pictorial Field: 6032 m2, the largest that exists with a "unique theme": The Madonna (whose human life, mission, assumption and glorification in the sky are illustrated).
> Three schools of the Italian painting: the "Venetian", the "Bolognese", the " Milanese". All figurative part belongs to the Venetian school and was painted by Mattia Bortoloni.
