Summary:
Cardinal A. Vanhoye offers a valuable description of the Father by reference to Jn 17,4 as he states: “The Father reveals Himself as He who gives. It is this that is His fundamental attitude.” Here the introduction (17,1-5) is being considered to the well-known prayer of Jesus, in order to enquire into the three gifts that Jesus-Son receives from His Father: (a) complete and universal authority over human beings, (b) the disciples, and (c) the work to be accomplished perfectly. It is these gifts that are the central concern of these pages. The conclusion puts into relief three aspects: (a) a first nucleus centred on the relationship between Father and Son; (b) the second nucleus is the relationship between Jesus and the disciples; (c) the returning to the Father of that which has come forth from Him. Ultimately, these three aspects bring into focus the centrality of the Father in all that has for its definitive purpose the giving of “eternal life.”

Sumario:

Summary:
In the Fourth Gospel there are different testimonies that converge in Jesus; in these the Father manifests Himself. He who for love of the world has sent his Son (3,6) actuates this His great love through multiple testimony (His works, the Scriptures, the Spirit, the disciples, other personages) that aims to fasten all eyes on Jesus, and that is articulated literarily, as it were, around the two great witness protagonists of the narrative (John and the beloved disciple). Through these various testimonies, then, but also by His own voice (12,28), the Father affirms that the definitive salvation has been revealed in Jesus Messiah and Son of God, for all those who, accepting these testimonies, will believe in Him (cf. 20,31).

Summary:
The baptism received by Jesus from John is narrated by the Synoptic Gospels. The Fourth Gospel, from the beginning of its narration, concentrates on the testimony of John received from God the Father. The scene in this Gospel, parallel to the Synoptic story of Jesus’ baptism, highlights a transition from ignorance to knowledge of the Word on the part of John and other positive personages, contrasted by the persistence in the ignorance and by the lack of the knowledge of the Word on the part of the institutional authorities of Jews. This change is possible by the triple experience of the recipient of God’s revelation: recognition of its origin from God the Father, personal meeting with Jesus and the assistance of the Holy Spirit.

Summary:
The Father’s presence in the Passion of Jesus becomes concrete in four characteristic texts, three of which are found exclusively in the Third Gospel. Study of these four texts makes evident the active role of the Father in the culminating events of Jesus’s earthly life; these events are, in effect, transformed into a revelation of the goodness of the Father and of His benevolent plan of salvation.

Sumario:

Summary:
Jesus's exhortation to pray concerns an issue of fundamental importance for the theology of the Gospel of Luke. The parable following the instruction on the Lord’s Prayer calls the disciples to pray God with ajnai÷deia (Lk 11,8). This term describes the attitude held by the petitioner towards his friend and not by the friend who is being petitioned. It should be taken in its literal meaning as representing an audacious relationship to God. By this example, the disciples are encouraged to be confident that God the Father is always ready to hear His children.

Sumario:

Summary:
The reader of St. Luke’s Gospel becomes aware that in the first four chapters there is evident tension concerning the father of Jesus: Joseph and/or God? Four texts are the basis of the present enquiry: the annunciation to Mary (1,26-38), the finding of Jesus in the Temple (2,41- 52), the immediate preparation for Jesus’s ministry (3,21-4,13) and, finally, the programmatic text of the entire Lucan oeuvre, the launching of Jesus’s ministry (4,14-44). After Lk 4 there is no longer found any reference to any paternity on the part of Joseph; from that point on, human beings’ recognition of the bond between God-Father and Jesus-Son will become part of Luke’s programme.

Sumario:

Summary:
According to Luke, already in His first words Jesus discloses His intimate relationship with God (Lc 2,49). Here this particular point will be examined, why Jesus speaks of God as “my Father” at this point in the narrative. Precisely for this reason, Lk 1-2 will be analysed, so as to bring to light the divine fatherly dimension present in the events there narrated. Jesus knows of these events – especially through his mother (as suggested by the term ) – and comes to understand them ever more deeply, on the basis of the Scriptures of Israel, to which they refer back. Thus, thanks to divine grace (cf. Lk 1,35; 2,40.52), He uniquely understands the truth of God in Himself, truth that is formulated by the expression that best includes and manifests the diverse aspects revealed by God and above all the personal, profound and intimate bond of the Son with the Father, namely: My Father!

Sommario:

Summary:
Romanesque Art contains very old recollections in its manifestations. In fact, a few iconographic representations of this Art that apparently might seem indecipherable can be traced back to ancient religious forms such as Gnosticism or Hellenistic Astrology. The constellation of Sagittarius and the transition from the Sol Invictus of the Winter Solstice to the Christian Sol Salutis are among these elements. Other figures can be explained in the light of the interaction with Eastern religious traditions; in particular through contacts with Iran during the Islamic rule. The specific ancient Iranian (that is Zoroastrian) culture constitutes the original background of the Astrological representations that we find in the Romanesque churches of Southern Piedmont.

Sumario:

Summary:
The Lutheran church and Lutheran theology have had a deep influence in Scandinavian societies over the last 500 years. This is true about the moral and intellectual climate but also about the more general structure of society and social institutions. Although Scandinavian societies are often presented as being highly secularized, this is only partly true. The public influence of religion has diminished and church adherence has plummeted but religious belief is still there. Theologically, the problem is the severed link between belief and morality and everyday life. This is the Achilles heel of contemporary Lutheran theology in general: there is no agreed upon notion of Christian life or morality. The situation in Scandinavia is not that different from the situation of Protestant theology in Western countries in general. Three theological movements have emerged to challenge the situation: (1) Radical Orthodoxy in the UK, (2) post-liberal and narrative theology in the US and (3) analytic theology. Both Radical Orthodoxy and post-liberal theology maintain that Christian churches and theologies need to be true to their own tradition and maintain a critical distance to secular culture. They also emphasize that theology should arise from Christian life lived in Christian communities. The analytic theology movement is somewhat different and its emphasis is purely intellectual: theological claims are defensible in the public forum, if tools and methods are adopted from analytic philosophy.

Sumario:

Summary:
This study highlights the contribution made by St. Bernardine of Siena to social and political ethics. Through the virtue of caritas, translating the voluntary paupertas, of St. Francis, St. Bernardine indicates to the cives fideles a model of behaviour for the safeguarding of the res publica. On the lips of the Observant preacher, the Gospel code would become the guiding norm for the civitas as it is engaged upon the distribution of the common good, a criterion for distinguishing between licit and illicit commercial practices, for the whole of the Franciscan school of economics. Commercial goods do not an objective value, but acquire their meaning inasmuch as they are being exchanged without damaging the value of the goods, their price, and the persons who produce them, exchange them and use them. In conclusion there is presented a crucial element of reflection concerning Bernardinian civil thought in its historical dimension: How far does the community extend, to which the bonum commune is applied, in which it increases and within which it is distributed? What is the concrete horizon of civil caritas?

Sumario:

Summary:
Starting from the Franciscan Observance and the socio-economic characteristics of the 1400’s, this study underlines the contribution of Bernardine of Siena regarding the activity of some market actors who were his contemporaries. The merchant and the lucrum of commerce are no longer condemned a priori, but are rather considered indispensable to the good of the communitas, where avarice and the unproductive concentration of riches are being defeated. This constitutes and important and eminently Franciscan novum in theological and canonical reflection. Moreover, Franciscan thought here goes beyond the merely theoretical and hortatory, giving birth to the Mons Pietatis, an institution extraordinarily relevant to our own time, as it is compared with today’s microcredit, and one that is capable to make tangible the fruitfulness of the virtuous circulation of wealth, through the creation of civil credit. Economic historiography of the transition from the late Middle Ages to the modern period, as achieved with the Franciscan contribution, is particularly fertile with intuitions and categories that are valid for our time too.

Sumario:

Summary:
This study analyses the contents of the Lenten sermon that Bernardine of Siena delivers in Florence, in 1425, from which there emerges the social and political sensibility of this Observant preacher. Ample space is given over to the value of alms, underlining almsgiving’s dual aspect, the ethical and the economic, the public and the private. On the one hand indeed, the practice of almsgiving concerns good government, the bonum commune; on the other hand, though, it belongs to the works of mercy privately commended to every Christian. The second part of this article means to put in evidence the high conception of almsgiving attributed to St. Francis, who spoke rather of the poor and not of solving the problem of poverty through the practice of allocating funds. In the conclusion a parallel is being hypothesized between the lives of St. Francis and of St. Bernardine of Siena, insofar as both experienced conversion through the act of renouncing their worldly goods and distributing them to the poor.

Sumario:

It falls to Professor Klemens Stock, SJ, who teaches at the Pontifical Biblical Institute to contribute an authoritative presentation of the scholarly studies that are at the heart of this second issue of Antonianum for the year 2013. This exempts me from my usual task of introducing here the articles chosen to be included in any individual issue. I may not, however, consider myself dispensed from the pleasant duty of thanking, first of all, Professor Stock, who so ably guides the International Group for the Exegetical Study of the Gospels (GISEV), the fruits of whose research Antonianum is honoured to publish in the form of a monographic issue on the subject: “The Divine Fatherhood in the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John”. Indeed, on behalf of the editorial board of Antonianum, I thank Professor Stock, not only for this introduction to the papers written by his disciples, themselves established scholars in their field, but for the recognition extended to us by having settled on this journal for their publication. Likewise I thank our own professor of the exegesis of the New Testament, Jorge Humberto Morales Ríos OFM, whose studies of St. Mark’s Gospel have gained distinct appreciation, for having been our liaison to this scholarly enterprise, and for having coordinated the editing process, with professionalism and diligence. Antonianum, aiming to embody the attention that our University has always reserved to team work, specifically in the perspective of multidisciplinary synergies, could not but be hospitable with regard to the initiatives of the International Group for the Exegetical Study of the Gospels, of which Prof. Morales is a member. Furthermore, team work, working together, is a practice Franciscans highly esteem, given that our Founder willed our institutional framework to be a “brotherhood.” Being, moreover, the journal of a Franciscan University that includes the prestigious Studium Biblicum Franciscanum of Jerusalem among its Faculties, how could we not take up the opportunity of publishing these studies of the Word of God in the Gospel, of which St. Francis himself was first a hearer and then a herald? Thus, while I congratulate these scholars on the originality and depth of their papers, I do willingly make room for Professor Stock to present, in synthesis, their several contributions.

The relationship between theology and social, political and economic life is the common subject of the articles of this first issue of 2013. Hailed in the Middle Ages as the queen of the sciences, theology has later had some difficulty, in the modern and contemporary periods, in being welcomed into the universitas scientiarum. The cause of its marginalization may depend, in addition to the context, on certain lacunae built into its epistemological status, and not least on theologians’ ineptitude in expounding the contents of the Christian faith in a comprehensible, efficacious and meaningful manner. In today’s theological landscape, in between the alternatives of defeatism and radical militancy, the great Franciscan tradition of the fifteenth century constitutes a kind of via media, insofar as, through setting forth an economic-political ethics adequate to the complexities of commerce, it offers a just consideration of “secular” reality without bowing to, or degenerating into, “secularism”.
